Leipzig – city of music, trade fair, city of books
Whether music city, trade fair city or city of books – Leipzig has been an important centre of Europe for centuries and thus one of the most lively and dynamic cities in Germany.
Philosophers such as Leibniz, Nietzsche and Bloch have influenced the city’s thinking to this day. Famous poets such as Lessing, Klopstock, Gottsched or Goethe were drawn here. Leipzig is famous all over the world for its musicality. The city is characterized by a long tradition that goes back to the life and musical work of Bach and Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
Art, science and culture are also reflected today in the city, which was founded in 1165. Several thousand scientists work at almost 20 non-university research institutions, at the university and six other universities. The Thomaner Choir, the Gewandhaus Orchestra, the many museums and a lively theatre scene characterise the cultural life of the city. The “Leipzig School” and the “Cotton Spinning Mill” are leaders in the world of art.
After the peaceful revolution, Leipzig was able to develop into one of the most diverse regions in eastern Germany and is now experiencing a comeback to the logistics and technology centre in the heart of Europe. Leipzig today is characterised by economic dynamism, a high cultural level, many green oases and, last but not least, an excellent quality of life.
